Artist in Residence at Accent Arts

My paintings are hanging in the window at Accent Arts Creative Framing at 1618 Lake Street in Minneapolis.  I am thrilled to be an Artist in Residence and in partnership at this amazing Framing store.  Accent Arts has been in business there for years and at the end of June the building will be torn down to make way for more condos…..did we need more condos in uptown?

I’ll keep you updated on the new location as soon as it’s determined.  In the meantime, make your way uptown and make sure to stop in and see Greg at Accent Art.  Better yet, what framing do you need done?  Greg does a fantastic job at framing–paintings, photographs and shadow boxes.   You will love the skill, precision and artistic eye that he brings to framing.

See you soon!

See This Cute Doggy at the Crawl!

I'm so Happy to See YouSaturday October 5th from 9-5
You can see this adorable doggy. This painting is called “I’m so Happy to See You!”

Have you ever had a dog that almost wagged their tail off because they were so excited to see you? This painting shows the kinetic energy that happens all around when you’re with a dog that loves you that much. How’s that for unconditional love? We could all learn from this puppy!

Hope to see you at the crawl on Saturday!

Over the next two weeks I’ll give you a sneak preview of some of the new paintings that you will see there.  I look forward to seeing you!

Get Your Creative On!

I’ve been thinking about the rituals and systems that I use to stay in the “zone”….the Creative Zone that is.  When I first started painting, I would paint in fits and starts, whenever the inspiration struck me and I had time, etc.  This produced paintings that were sometimes brilliant and sometimes not finished.  I would worry after a really great session that the creativity would dry up and I’d never produce another painting.

When I started working systematically on staying open, the fear slowly receded and I could fearlessly look at the next blank canvas.  I worked with the Creativity Formula and tweaked it so I could be open every day and instantly when I needed to.

Being creative is really how well you get out of the way and let the flow and language of your soul show through.  At the beginning, you must be vulnerable and full of faith that it will show up.  It’s  not always the easiest thing to do.  The most profound pieces of getting out of the way is clearing old beliefs and limiting thoughts.  One of the most valuable self-study ways to do this is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).  I became certified in EFT to level 3 with Valeris Lis at Courses for Life .  You can also get more information about it at EFT Universe.

I’ll be hosting a new Meetup starting in September for Creative Professionals.  We’ll be practicing EFT, playing games and networking.  If you are in the Twin Cities, I hope you’ll RSVP and stop by.  I’d love to meet you!

Confident Color for Painters

The thing most people notice about my paintings is that there is lots of color.  Color adds energy, fun and sometimes discordance.  Choosing the right colors takes more than a gut feeling.  Skillfully finding the colors that will convey the emotion and message you want to deliver can take some practice.  Knowing color theory and having a personal color palette makes life much easier for a painter.

I have studied color and then, of course, found through trial and error what works (and what doesn’t work).  Before I learned how colors behave together, I’ve had paintings that are complete messes…and will never be shown….that’s what gesso is for! 🙂  There are some wonderful resources for finding your color palette.  I recommend Confident Color by Nita Leland.

If you are a “hand-on” kind of person, I’ll be teaching a Confident Color for Painters class in May at the Savage Arts Studios and Gallery.  Check it out!
