The thing most people notice about my paintings is that there is lots of color. Color adds energy, fun and sometimes discordance. Choosing the right colors takes more than a gut feeling. Skillfully finding the colors that will convey the emotion and message you want to deliver can take some practice. Knowing color theory and having a personal color palette makes life much easier for a painter.
I have studied color and then, of course, found through trial and error what works (and what doesn’t work). Before I learned how colors behave together, I’ve had paintings that are complete messes…and will never be shown….that’s what gesso is for! 🙂 There are some wonderful resources for finding your color palette. I recommend Confident Color by Nita Leland.
If you are a “hand-on” kind of person, I’ll be teaching a Confident Color for Painters class in May at the Savage Arts Studios and Gallery. Check it out!
